Ways you can study in Welsh
Depending on your course and institution, you may be able to attend Welsh-medium classes, complete individual modules in Welsh, submit assignments in Welsh or use both Welsh and English during your studies.
There are opportunities to study in Welsh or bilingually at college, through an apprenticeship and at university. Support is also available for learners who understand Welsh but may not yet feel confident using it in an academic or workplace setting.
What does studying in Welsh or bilingually mean?
Welsh-medium and bilingual study can look different depending on the course you choose.
You do not need to choose between studying entirely in Welsh or entirely in English, and for many learners, bilingual study means using both languages in a way that suits their them.
Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol
Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol works with colleges, universities, apprenticeship providers and employers to create and promote opportunities to study and train through the medium of Welsh.
Its student website includes information for people considering college and further education, apprenticeships, undergraduate study, postgraduate study and employment and professional development.
You can also use the website to explore Welsh-medium courses, scholarships, learning resources and the support available at different institutions.
Choosing to use Welsh as part of your studies can help you maintain and develop your language skills while gaining your qualification.
Welsh skills in the workplace
Welsh-language skills are used across many areas of employment in North Wales, including education, health and social care, local government, public services, media, tourism, community work and the creative industries.
You don’t have to be a completely fluent or first-language Welsh speaker to explore these opportunities. Some learners begin by taking one module, attending a bilingual session or choosing to complete part of an assignment in Welsh.
Welsh in your future career
Welsh-language skills can be valuable beyond your course.
Many organisations in Wales deliver bilingual services, and some roles require or benefit from an ability to communicate in Welsh.
Even if a particular job does not require fluent Welsh, being willing and able to use some Welsh may still be useful.
